Mobile Sketch: Draw and Define a Basic Shape

Create a closed room with exact dimensions, use pop points and auto-close, define the area, and verify square footage.

This workflow creates a basic 10-foot-by-10-foot room using precision inputs. The same process applies to other rectangular areas with different dimensions.

Before you begin

  • Select the Draw tool.
  • Open the Precision menu so dimensions and directions can be entered exactly.
  • Choose an open area of the canvas where the first vertex can be placed clearly.

Workflow

1. Place the first vertex

Tap the canvas to place the starting point. The Precision menu opens after the first vertex is created.

2. Draw the first two walls

Enter 10 feet, choose the down direction, and confirm the second vertex. Keep the length at 10 feet, choose right, and confirm the next wall.

3. Use the pop point

The red pop point indicates an aligned target. Choose the up direction and confirm without re-entering the 10-foot dimension when the pop point already establishes the intended alignment.

4. Close and define the shape

Use Auto-close to return to the starting vertex. When prompted, assign the correct area definition, such as Level 1 above-grade area.

5. Verify the result

Switch to Selection, select the room, and confirm that the shape and Calculations tab both report 100 square feet and identify the area as closed.

Field notes

  • A definition is available only after the boundary is closed.
  • Pop points reduce repeated dimension entry, but the resulting alignment should still be checked visually.
  • Confirm both the geometry and area definition before using the square footage in the report.

Final review

Before leaving the assignment, confirm that the geometry matches the field measurements, every closed area has the correct definition, labels and features are readable, and the calculations reflect the intended report treatment. Use manual sync and verify the updated sketch in the web application.
